Rainbows End

Thought I would start the blog off with a winner.

If you like science fiction, read Rainbows End. The book takes place just barely pre singularity, where super powerful intelligence agencies battle the viruses made by doomsday cults, where every human being spends most of his/her time interacting with virtual reality overlays and where alogrythms that might have gotten you a patent in the early 21st centruy will get you a good grade in high school. Maybe. Rainbows End describes itself as a novel with one foot in the future.

Here's what makes Rainbows End worth your time. Even with all the 'Gee Whiz' moments, even with all the plausible presentation of the future it's treating characters with heart that keeps you reading. Rainbows End is about many things, but more then anything it is about Robert Gu. Robert Gu is a recently cured Alzheimer's patient and famous poet. He's also a douche. While he's fighting through his future shock -stuck in remedial classes at high school- Robert struggles with betrayal, devils bargains with spoofed personalities, all his own personal loss and no longer being something special.

It's the humanity that shines through all the gadgetry, and hey if that isn't your thing theres still global conspiracies ultra complex plots future UCSD (my own alma mater) the possibility of nuking southern california and the meanest rabbit this side of monty python.
